And just so we don't lose it, Cam's post from June 13, 2000. Wow, has it been that long? Here's hoping this thread goes on for another eight years.

Howdy all!
Maybe I’m being arrogant, but I just figured that there might be some interest in what the weather is like in my little corner of Antarctica, so here goes:
1230 hours (local), June 14th (one more week until mid-winter).
The ambient temperature is 17 degrees below zero Fahrenheit with a wind-chill hovering around 50-60 below. This is about typical most of the time, although a couple of weeks ago it got down to 102 below.
There’s a bit of cloud cover so the stars are kind of faint. You can’t see any twilight glow on the northern horizon due to the clouds. It gets pretty dark here, but as long as the ski is clear we can catch a slight glimpse of dim twilight blue to the north.
Yesterday, we were treated to a small showing of the aurora australis (southern lights), which was kind of fun. We never get to see those as much as we’d like, but if we did, they’d be commonplace and not nearly so special. Saw a flash from a satellite’s antenna the other day. That was pretty cool. It got pretty darned bright for a good ten or fifteen seconds before dimming back down to the brightness of a normal star.
Eat a ripe tomato for me,
-Mel

Hot.. humid... Hot.. um.. did i mention HOT!? Just wondering. Texas is Sybil on crack. It can never make up it's mind on if it's going to be cold and rainy or just down right miserable..
Although for this week it has chose miserable.. in every sense of the word. as long as that word is "Hot".

Here in my part of Hawaii it's partly cloudy, pleasantly warm, with a gentle cooling mist that came just in time for PT this morning.
I like the weather here a little bit.

My corner of the UK can't seem to decide between rain (warm rain is a nice change for me from cold rain though...) and sun.
It could be a little warmer, but I'm not really complaining as the rain keeps me in and painting.

Dayton is home to the USAF's national museum. I visited it longer ago then I care to admit, but it was definitely a cool place to check out. I think even if someone wasn't into aviation stuff they would probably get a kick out of it.
Hazy, hot, and humid today outside the office, but then that's summer time in NJ.

Hmmm...USAF museum, Rock-n-Roll HOF, NFL HOF...three reasons to take a roadtrip to Ohio. Seeing as how Mrs. Tiger's dad was in the USAF, I just might talk her into going....

Always wanted to go to Dayton. Dad planned a family trip there last year but we ended up not going. I've spent a lot of time at the first- and third-largest air museums in the US; it would be cool to complete the trifecta.
Now that Broward County's budget is drastically cut, it's looking more and more like I might be free to hunt for a museum job soon. If I do, Dayton will be one of my first choices. If it has anything open...
Grey overcast, almost white. But no rain. With luck this hurricane season will be as harmless as the last two (knock plastic).

Spent some time outside today -- not too hot but muggy. I still haven't gotten the hang of messing with my thermostat, and just walking in the door gives me a blast of cold air in the face.
Experimenting with walking the cat -- he likes to get outside, and as long as I have the harness hooked up right, he should be fine with me following him.

Thus far, summer here in Maryland/DC has been pretty much hot and sunny every day, and a thunderstorm every other day. On Saturday, we had two thunderstorms in seven hours (one at 3 pm, lasting about an hour, then again at 10 pm, also lasting about an hour).
The lawn loves it. The dogs are less than thrilled (they're scared of thunder).

Intermittent rain. Drove in it, in the dark. Does anyone have tips for cleaning the INSIDE of your windshield? It's getting greasy or something, which spreads out the lights and makes it hard to see. I really don't want to drive in that situation again.
Edit: Tried walking the cat today. Although I was expecting a thunderstorm (lots of rumbling in the skies), nothing happened. The mugginess was canceled out by a nice breeze.

Wait... what?
The cat lets you walk it? That's awesome. I would totally take a picture if I saw someone walking a cat.
JenBurdoo
Jul 3 2008, 11:23 PM
Um, no. Doesn't quite work that way, because the direction a cat wants to go is never the direction you want to go. Walking a cat is a matter of harnessing and leashing it, then following it into the brambles or whatever else it chooses to explore. Mkendrick is an indoor cat, but he likes the outdoors and a leash is a good way of not losing him but letting him have his head. Once (if ever) I get his microchip registered, I might experiment with letting him roam free, but at this point I'm not risking it.

Jen, you could try one of those leashes that has a spool inside a plastic handle. Lets you stay outside the brambles (always a good thing).
Weather is fantastic over here. Nice and warm, without being hot enough to melt my headphones to my ears

Use windex and newspaper to clean the glass.
I havea little chamois covered sponge that works to keep the windows from fogging up. I bought it in germany but I'd imagine you can get them at auto sotres or truckstops in the US. You might also see a blue trated cloth that comes in a little pouch, either one works well.

My mom tried to walk our cat once, then the people across the street let there dog out who proceded to bark at our her (my cat, not my mom, thou it may have been both). Well needless to say my she got scared and ended up riping the lesh handel out of my mom's hand and bolted under the house were she proced to stuck, for several hours, latter when she finnaly got out she rechurned all muddy and missing both her collar and lesh (which ended up being so tangeled under their that it was imposible to rechreave it. Long story short we never walked our cat again! Now back on topic, here in Michigan it's about 70 and really sunny, a nice change of pace after the last few weeks of storms and miserrable humidity.
EDIT: Oh goody more rain in the forcast till Tuesday

, at least it will be sunny on Friday

Heh, I could never imagine putting my cat on a leash. He's been too much of a wild thing all 15 or so years of his life. Plus, he always comes back from his wanderings, usually with dead chipmunks.
Here in Pittsburgh its in the 70's. A little more humid than I would like, but at least it's been sunny recently.

Jen, if the greasy look comes back after you have cleaned the windshield with glass cleaner, you have a leak of some sort that's getting into your AC. Fine particles of something are getting into the line and are being blown onto the inside of the glass. If you are a heavy smoker, you will get a somewhat similar (albiet less quickly accumulating) effect from the smoke.

Thanks for the glass-cleaning comments. I'll try them.
Our cat, Radar, in Tucson drives my little brother nuts. If he keeps his door shut at night, Radar sits outside, meows incessantly, and keeps him awake. If he leaves the door open, Radar brings dead birds in and snacks on them under his bed, again keeping him awake. Methinks it's time to give up on the cat door....
Lightning and thunder outside. Hurricane Bertha looks like it'll miss us.
Edit: Wow. The storm just passed right over my head. In the last five minutes, there have been three house-shaking CRACKs that set off car alarms and reset my computer. And now I can't hear any thunder at all...

After watching my cat Champy die after being hit by a car, I will never, ever have another "outdoor" cat. What a horrific sight. My three cats are strictly indoor ones.
Warm today, thunderstorm predicted. Like yesterday. And tomorrow. And the day after that. This pattern is *REALLY* getting on my nerves.

Mid eighties today, sunny, and a little wind. The rest of the family took advantage of a beautiful day and went to the waterpark while I stayed home with a cold.
Still, I made the best of the day by taking a little walk through the yard with my dog. The day lilies are in bloom, and the yard is alive with reds, oranges, yellows, and purples.

The mushrooms were singing Strawberry Fields Forever, too. Is that bad?
No, seriously, the former owner of my house was some kind of Day Lilly fan club member. He filled about 75% of the yard with these flowers, some of them costed like $100, and others were his own special breeds!
If you don't believe me, I'll put up a picture, and you eyes will explode.

Took the cat out briefly today, then went for a walk to the bookstore. Luckily I am not too close to the street and there are few cars, but I usually keep him on a harness. I think he likes the sensation of dirt, because he settles down in the flowerbeds. He also crawls through the grass even when there are no birds in sight. It was pretty muggy, and following him around in the sun made me hot and bothered. Then he heard a loud truck on the other side of the fence and raced back to my door...

Hot and muggy. It makes it hard to want to finish painting the outside of the house.
Jen, we haven't been able to let our cat outside for 3 years since he won't stay in the yard and we were afraid he'd get squashed but we've found an answer. Our dog doesn't respect our fence, since it's too short and she can jump right over, forcing us to also install a fenceless fence system too. This worked really well and we found out that the same company makes a collar for cats. Its shock is much lower but Nelson doesn't leave the yard now. He's even losing weight, which is a great side benifit.
